PARKERSBURG -- A Parkersburg woman who died Monday in an accident on Lost Pavement Road has been identified, the Wood County Sheriff's Department reported Tuesday.
Michelle Nicole Dowler-Sams, 36, died in a single car crash in the 2200 block of Lost Pavement Road, the sheriff's department said in a release.
"She was transported by St. Joseph's Ambulance to WVU-CCMH where she later succumbed to her injuries sustained in the crash," the release stated.
Deputies were dispatched to the scene shortly after 5 p.m. Monday.
Preliminary investigation shows that the 2010 Nissan Rogue was traveling westbound on Lost Pavement Road at a high rate of speed when it failed to negotiate a turn near Hope Hill Road, according to the release.
The vehicle ran off the road to the right, striking a large tree causing the tree to get knocked over and the vehicle to land further down the embankment.
Deputy Travis Fridenstine was first on scene and observed the driver trapped inside the car that was on fire, the release said.
''Deputy Fridenstine was able to extinguish the fire and then successfully pull the driver out of the car,'' the release said. ''The car later rekindled and the deputy and bystanders moved the driver further from the vehicle.''
After the car became fully engulfed, Lubeck Volunteer Fire Department responded and extinguished the fire.
