City Park ceremony honors the fallen

PARKERSBURG -- Fallen soldiers were honored during a ceremony Monday morning presented by American Legion Post 15.
Before heading to City Park, a ceremony was held at the legion building where they named members who had passed since last Memorial Day.
As a way to involve civilians as well, Marianne Bennet from the American Legion said they do a similar ceremony at City Park.
Complete with the Pledge of Allegiance, the ceremonial playing of "Taps" and the National Anthem, the event brought people together to remember.
Last year's event could not take place but this year, Bennet said she was grateful people were able to gather together.
"We need it," she said. "It's just to remember the fallen in battle, not just our veterans. (We need) to remember what it's for, it's not just picnics."
Bill Shepherd, president of the Mid-Ohio Valley Veterans Museum, also talked about the importance of the day.
"Number one, I'm a veteran. Number two, I had friends who died in Vietnam," he said. "It's about remembrance."
People also came to the park to look at the names on bricks to honor current and former veterans.
Shepherd said the Veterans Museum will have an event June 26 where it will install around 60 memorial bricks at City Park.
Bricks can be purchased for anyone wishing to pay homage to a friend or loved one who was a military member.
"There's also people remembering their family and until we get this back in our heads the right way, things aren't going to change," Shepherd said.
