Wood County returns to green status on COVID chart

CHARLESTON — Wood County returned to the lowest level on the County Alert System based on infection rates and percentage of those testing positive.

The county was listed as green on Wednesday and previously was yellow, second in least severity, on the map, according to Wednesday’s pandemic update from the state Department of Health and Human Resources.

Also listed as green were Ritchie, Roane and Gilmer counties. Wirt, Pleasants and Wetzel were listed as orange, second highest in terms of spread and positivity on the chart.

Jackson and Calhoun were yellow and Tyler was gold. Nicholas is the only red county, the highest category.

The state on Wednesday reported four deaths from the virus in the 24-hour period from Tuesday to Wednesday morning in Berkeley, Webster, Kanawha and Raleigh counties. The youngest was a 36-year-old man from Webster.

The death toll is 2,767 residents since the pandemic began in March 2020 in West Virginia.

Active cases as of Wednesday were 5,983, the first time they were below 6,000 since March 25. New active cases from Tuesday to Wednesday were 261.

Active cases in local counties (previous day) were: Calhoun, 38 (51); Doddridge, 20 (24); Gilmer, 23 (27); Jackson, 50 (76); Pleasants, 48 (45); Ritchie, 19 (18); Roane, 20 (25); Tyler, 49 (48); Wetzel, 133 (147); Wirt, 20 (17); Wood, 99 (107).

The state reported 210 people are in the hospital for COVID related complications with 78 in an intensive care unit and 35 on ventilators.

The number of residents 12 and older with at least one shot is 757,642, 42.3 percent of the population. Gov. Jim Justice said the mask mandate will be removed June 20 when the percentage is 65 percent or near that level.

The state has fully vaccinated 648,855 residents, 36.2 percent.

In local counties, the number of residents fully vaccinated and percent of the population are: Calhoun, 1,703 24; Doddridge, 3,452, 40.9; Gilmer, 2,023, 25.9; Jackson, 9,484, 33.2; Pleasants, 2,404, 32.2; Ritchie, 2,981, 31.2; Roane, 4,301, 31.4; Tyler, 2,367, 27.6; Wetzel, 5,397, 35.8; Wirt, 1,636, 28.1; Wood, 27,737, 33.2.

West Virginians age 12 and older are eligible for vaccines. Information is available at coronavirus.wv.gov or at 833-734-0965.

Free vaccination clinics are scheduled today at: 9-noon at the United Methodist Church, 10 Howard Jeffers Drive, New Martinsville, for Wetzel and Tyler counties; and 9 a.m.-5 p.m. at the WVU-Parkersburg Early Learning Center.

Friday’s schedule is: 9 a.m.-2 p.m. at the South Parkersburg Baptist Church, 1655 Blizzard Drive; 10 a.m.-noon, 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. at Wincore Windows, 238 Old Turnpike Road, Parkersburg.

A clinic will be held 9 a.m.-noon Saturday at the Jackson County Armory, Millwood.
