PARKERSBURG — Two former Wood County school buildings and their property were sold in public auction on Friday.
The former Worthington and McKinley Elementary schools will no longer be under the control of the school district after being closed down in the spring of 2020.
“We are pleased with the results of today’s property auctions,” Wood County Schools Superintendent Will Hosaflook said. “While we are sorry to say goodbye to those buildings, we believe they will continue to be a part of their communities and this step will allow Wood County Schools to continue moving forward providing the best services and facilities for our students.”
Worthington’s auction was held in the morning and was bought by Nick Curry for $410,000.
Curry, who owns Curry Transfer and Storage Company in Parkersburg, said he was interested in the property based on the square foot and the condition that the former elementary school is in.

“I just thought I’d come out today to see what this place would go for, to see if I could get it for a good price,” Curry said. ” I had a limit and I was able to actually come in under what the limit was. So I’m actually pretty happy with what we ended up with.”
Only finding out about the auction in the last week, Curry said he is unsure what he will do with the newly purchased property.
The Worthington property has three lots in the deed book. The sale did not include the baseball fields, playground or basketball court.
The second auction taking place in the afternoon, the former McKinley Elementary was bought by Seve Astorg, representing Astorg Auto, for $165,000.
“It’s just a great piece of Parkersburg history. Obviously, our family’s been here a long time. We wanted to see it go in a good direction,” Astorg said. “My father (Paul) was out of town. So I came down here to represent him today and we’ll see where it goes. I’m not really sure what his plans are right now.”
McKinley’s property has five lots recorded in the deed book and includes the school building that was built in 1904 and the playground.
