CHARLESTON - A Roane County resident was listed among the confirmed deaths from the COVID-19 coronavirus Tuesday morning by the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources.
The department in its Tuesday pandemic update said a 72-year-old woman from Roane County was among the five residents across the state reported in the 24-hour period from Monday to Tuesday to have died from the virus.
Deaths also were reported in Jefferson, Fayette, Putnam and Mercer counties, the state said. The youngest was a 51-year-old woman from Fayette County.
The death count since the pandemic began a year ago is 2,734 residents of West Virginia.
Active cases as of Tuesday were 6,780, a drop from the 6,973 on Monday. The state reported 258 new cases in the 24-hour period from Monday to Tuesday.

Tyler, Jackson, Wirt, Calhoun and Gilmer counties were orange, second in severity, in the County Alert System based on the spread of the virus.
Pleasants and Doddridge are yellow, second in least severity. Tyler is gold.
Wood and Ritchie counties are green, the level of least severity of spread and infection.
No counties were red as of Tuesday.
The state reported 253 people are in a hospital for COVID-related complications with 78 in an intensive care unit and 36 on ventilators.
The state has fully vaccinated 631,921 residents with 735,375 people with at least one shot.
Forty-one percent of the state has at least one shot. Gov. Jim Justice last week said the mask mandate will be removed June 20 in anticipation of vaccinating 65 percent of residents 12 and older with at least one dose.
The state has prepared for the Food and Drug Administration's approval of the emergency use authorization of the Pfizer vaccine application in people 12-to-15 years old.
Residents 16 to 35 who get a vaccination will receive either a $100 savings bond or a gift certificate.
