Police: Meter reader discovers Calhoun County murder-suicide

ROSEDALE — A male and female were killed in a murder-suicide in Calhoun County on Tuesday morning, officials said.

Thomas Cain, 55, shot and killed Margaret Osborn, 77, then himself on Mount Run Road, said Sgt. Bill Huddleston of the Sutton detachment of the West Virginia State Police.

The initial call came to the state police at 8:45 a.m. Tuesday when a MonPower meter reader contacted troopers saying a body was found inside a residence, Huddleston said.

State troopers from Sutton were the first on the scene and one body was seen outside and the other was inside the home, Huddleston said.

The residence was in proximity to the county line, but after investigation, it was discovered the incident happened in Calhoun County.

Because the call was so close to the Braxton County line, Huddleston said he believes the caller contacted law enforcement at the first opportunity he had cell phone service. The scene of the incident was about 800 feet from the county line, he said.

Troopers from Calhoun County will be investigating the incident.
