One COVID death reported in W.Va.

CHARLESTON -- One death was reported Tuesday in West Virginia from the COVID-19 coronavirus by the Department of Health and Human Resources.

The state confirmed the death of an 87-year-old man from Jefferson County in the 24-hour period from Monday to Tuesday morning. Total deaths since the pandemic began about 14 months ago in West Virginia was at 2,763 as of Tuesday, the state said.

Active cases were at 6,077 as of Tuesday, a drop from the 6,296 on Monday, the state said in its Tuesday morning pandemic update. New cases totaled 245 in the 24 hours from Monday to Tuesday morning, the state said.

Active cases in local counties (previous day) were: Calhoun, 51 (48); Doddridge, 24 (25); Gilmer, 27 (29); Jackson, 76 (81); Pleasants, 45 (38); Ritchie, 18 (22); Roane, 25 (23); Tyler, 48 (50); Wetzel, 147 (152); Wirt, 17 (17); Wood, 107 (105).

The state reported 208 people are in the hospital for COVID related complications with 77 in an intensive care unit and 34 on ventilators.

Forty-two percent of residents 12 and older, 753,414 people, have received at least one shot of the vaccine. The mask mandate will be removed on June 20 when the state nears 65 percent of the population with at least one shot, the governor has said.

Fully vaccinated residents comprised 36.1 percent of the population, 646,865 people, according to the latest numbers from the state.

In local counties, the number of residents fully vaccinated and percent of the population are: Calhoun, 1,699. 25.9; Doddridge, 3,450, 40.8; Gilmer, 2,024, 25.9; Jackson, 9,491, 33.2; Pleasants, 2,399, 32.2; Ritchie, 2,976, 31.1; Roane, 4,299, 31.4; Tyler, 2,362, 27.5; Wetzel, 5,391, 35.8; Wirt, 1,634, 28.1; Wood, 27,693, 33.2.

Gilmer, Ritchie and Roane counties are green, the lowest level of COVID-19 spread, on the County Alert System.

Wood and Jackson counties are yellow, second lowest. Wetzel, Pleasans and Calhoun are orange, second highest in severity. Tyler, Doddridge and Wirt are gold, mid level on the charts.

Nicholas was the only county in the red, the worst category.
