Criminal complaint offers new details of Johnson murder
CHARLESTON — Additional details were released about the murder of Cheyenne Johnson of Jackson County who was allegedly killed last week by Michael Wayne Smith, 41, 1224 Britton Ridge Road, Charleston.
According to a criminal complaint filed with the Kanawha County Magistrate Court, an informant said she had information about Johnson’s whereabouts after she was declared a missing person Sunday.
The informant told law enforcement she overheard Smith, his girlfriend and another individual talking about “Sunshine,” Johnson’s nickname, the complaint said.
She allegedly overheard the group say a male individual brought Johnson to Smith’s girlfriend’s farm in Derrick’s Creek “where they had slit her throat and buried her.” the complaint said.
However, Smith admitted to shooting her in the head and putting her body inside a well, the complaint said.
With this information, law enforcement tried to find an address for Smith’s girlfriend which was later discovered to be Smith’s address on Britton Ridge Road in Charleston, the complaint said.
Deputies came into contact with Smith and his girlfriend at the residence and Smith’s girlfriend initially denied knowing Johnson, the complaint said.
Smith’s girlfriend agreed to take law enforcement to Johnson’s body; they walked several hundred yards away from the residents to a water well and Smith’s girlfriend said Smith had “taken care of her,” according to the complaint.
Smith provided a mirandized interview where he outlined what happened, the complaint said.
Smith claimed Johnson had stolen his girlfriend’s Chrysler Pacifica on Thursday night from their home on Britton Ridge Road, the complaint said. When Johnson returned with the vehicle Friday morning, Smith’s girlfriend confronted Johnson about taking the vehicle and told her to leave, according to the complaint.
The argument became physical and Johnson allegedly brandished a knife and tried to attack Smith’s girlfriend, according to Smith as detailed in the complaint. Smith said he tried to take the knife away from Johnson several times and admitted to repeatedly pushing and striking Johnson to get her to stop attacking, the complaint said.
He then got a rifle from a nearby vehicle before trying again to get Johnson to stop the violence but she would not, the complaint said. Smith then shot her in the head, which killed her; he then put her in the well using a belt and ratchet straps, according to the complaint.
After the incident, Smith said he took the knife, one of Johnson’s shoes, cigarettes and a lighter to the Ripley area where he disposed of the items, the complaint said.
A search warrant of the Britton Ridge Road residence took place Monday using underwater cameras and Johnson’s body was found.
Smith is being charged with first degree murder and is at South Central Regional Jail without bond.
