CHARLESTON -- The first death in Calhoun County from the COVID-19 coronavirus was confirmed Wednesday by the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources.
The victim was a 74-year-old woman from Calhoun County, the department said in its morning pandemic update.
The state Wednesday morning confirmed six deaths from the virus in the 24-hour period from Tuesday to Wednesday morning, raising the death count statewide since the pandemic began 14 months ago to 2,788 West Virginians.
Deaths also were reported in Fayette, Logan, Mercer and Monongalia counties with the youngest a 62-year-old man and the oldest a 92-year-old woman, both from Monongalia County.
Active cases continued to decline with 5,173 as of Wednesday, the state said. The state reported 190 new cases from Tuesday to Wednesday morning.

Wetzel and Wirt counties are gold on the County Alert System map, mid-level on the map based on infection rate and percent positivity. Wood, Doddridge, Tyler, Roane, Calhoun and Gilmer are green, the lowest level. Jackson and Ritchie are yellow, second lowest in severity.
Vaccination clinics will be held 9 a.m.-3 p.m. today at the Gilmer County Health Department in Glenville; 9 a.m.-noon today at the United Methodist Church in New Martinsville for Wetzel and Tyler counties; and 9 a.m.-4 p.m. today at the WVU Parkersburg Early Learning Center.
