$1.7M Parkersburg paving project starts next week

PARKERSBURG -- The city's annual paving project starts next week, with some overnight work on Murdoch Avenue beginning today.
A new plating system for the floodwall gate crossing Murdoch Avenue was installed in March. Work on the second phase begins at 8 p.m. today, with a crew paving the approaches to the plates to provide a smooth transition, according to a release from City Engineer Adam Stout.
Work will be conducted between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. It's expected to take about two days to complete.
The nearly $1.7 million paving project, by West Virginia Paving, is slated to kick off Tuesday with application of a pavement preservation technique expected to rejuvenate 4.37 miles of city streets. The process, which the city included in its paving program for the first time last year, extends the life of treated asphalt by six years or more.
"That's going on all the roads we paved last year, minus Fairview," Stout said.
The schedule for that work is three days, weather permitting. Flyers and notification banners will be placed on each street one day in advance, the release said.
Asphalt paving work is planned to begin on May 20, covering 8.64 miles of streets and replacing approximately 12,000 tons of asphalt, the release said.
The release advises motorists to be patient during the work and be cautious of altered traffic patterns.
