PARKERSBURG -- Minor injuries were reported in an accident that could have ended with a fatality Thursday morning on U.S. 50, Wood County Sheriff Steve Stephens said.
At about 6 a.m. Thursday, a Toyota Tacoma pick-up truck and a large truck carrying logs were heading east on U.S. 50 when the log truck turned on its four-way flashers while going up a hill due to a heavy load, Stephens said. The driver of the Tacoma failed to respond in time to the truck slowing its speed and rear-ended the truck, causing a log to go through the front windshield of the Tacoma and another to go through the back window of the truck transporting the logs.
According to Stephens, the driver of the pickup was taken to the hospital for leg injuries, a head wound and lacerations, but nothing was broken and he was released from WVU Medicine Camden Clark Medical Center. The driver of the truck transporting the logs received care on scene for scrapes from the log that went through the back window, but he was not transported.
"Motorists must remain vigilant and watch for slower moving vehicles," said Stephens.
The Public Service Commission, Cairo and Deerwalk volunteer fire departments, Camden Clark ambulance service and St. Joesph's Ambulance Service also responded.
