West Virginia reports another COVID death
CHARLESTON — One person was confirmed as a death from the COVID-19 coronavirus Thursday morning, the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources said.
The department confirmed the death of a 69-year-old man from Harrison County. The death count since the virus began last year was at 2,674 people in West Virginia, the state said.
The state reported 432 new virus cases in the 24-hour period from Wednesday to Thursday mornings. Active cases totaled 7,153, up from the 7,081 active cases on Wednesday.
Active cases in local counties (previous day) are: Calhoun, 16 (15); Doddridge, 21 (15); Gilmer, 20 (9); Jackson, 68 (65); Pleasants, 23 (23); Ritchie, 18 (17); Roane, 22 (22); Tyler, 21 (19); Wetzel, 122 (114); Wirt, 11 (10); Wood, 108 (106).
Wetzel and Berkeley remained the only red counties in the state’s County Alert System based on infection rate and percent positivity. Red is the severest level.
Doddridge County on Thursday joined Wirt and Pleasants in the yellow level, second from the bottom in severity. Gilmer turned on Thursday and joined Jackson County at gold, midway on the severity charts.
Wood, Tyler, Ritchie, Calhoun and Roane Other are green, the least severe.
The state reported 247 people were in the hospital with 78 in an intensive care unit and 26 on ventilators.
As of Thursday, 576,679 residents have been fully immunized. Getting at least one shot are another 707,329 people.
The number of people fully vaccinated in local counties and the percentage of the population are: Calhoun, 1,527, 21.5; Doddridge, 3,203, 37.9; Gilmer, 1,851, 23.7; Jackson, 8,428, 29.5; Pleasants, 2,204, 29.5; Ritchie, 2,615, 27.4; Roane, 3,891, 28.4; Tyler, 2,131, 24.8; Wetzel, 4,856, 32.2; Wirt, 1,480, 25.4; Wood, 23,748, 28.4.
Residents 16 and older can pre-register for vaccinations online at vaccinate.wv.gov or call 833-734-0965. Some clinics are accepting walk-ins or offering other registration methods. Residents should check with those providers for additional information.
Vaccination clinics scheduled this week in the region are:
* Calhoun County, 9 a.m.-noon, Calhoun Middle/High School, Front Loop, Mt. Zion.
* Doddridge County, 10 a.m.-noon, Doddridge County High School Technical Center, West Union.
* Gilmer County, 9-11:30 a.m. and 1-3:30 p.m., Gilmer County Health Department, Glenville.
* Wood County, 10 a.m.-noon, 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m., Wincore Windows, 250 Staunton Turnpike, Parkersburg.
