PARKERSBURG -- PETA's humane education division said it has sent a letter to Parkersburg High School Principal Kenny DeMoss requesting equal time for a classroom discussion about the cruelty of horse racing on Thursday.
Trainer Bob Baffert spoke about the horseracing industry to the school's Sports in American Culture class on April 14.
TeachKind, PETA's humane education division, asked about making an age-appropriate presentation that informs students horse racing is notorious for deadly injuries. Fifty-eight horses died at tracks in West Virginia last year, PETA said.
"An industry that's built on gambling and rife with drug abuse is not one to promote to students," PETA Senior Director of Youth Programs Marta Holmberg said. "TeachKind wants to help Parkersburg High School students exercise their critical thinking skills by giving them a balanced look at horse racing."
