PARKERSBURG -- The first Spring Clean-up in Parkersburg City Council District 4 will be 9 a.m.-noon Saturday.
The clean up is a joint effort organized by Councilor Wendy Tuck, the City of Parkersburg, the Solid Waste Authority and the Memorial Church of the Good Shepherd.
"Right now, everything is green and fresh," Tuck said. "But there are lots of places where trash has collected over the winter, and this is a good time to clean it up and make things better."
Residents in District 4 are invited to help clean trash, rake leaves and load junk into dumpsters. The Solid Waste Authority is providing two dumpsters parked on the lot at Charles and Latrobe streets.
Residents can take their trash, especially larger items that may not fit in the regular garbage cans, and put them in the dumpsters, Tuck said. If someone is disabled or elderly, they can call 304-482-4330 to have someone take their trash to the dumpster, she said.
"Volunteers from the neighborhood and the church are also willing to help clean up yards with the owner's permission," Linda Crocker, Parish Ministries at Good Shepherd, also known as the Pink Church, said. "Mostly we pick up trash along the sidewalks, streets, and alleys."
Volunteers for the Spring Clean-up will meet at the church, 903 Charles St., to get supplies. People can bring their own tools, like rakes, weed whackers, shovels or brooms while some tools will be provided.
"We have a family who takes care of their elderly mother. She's in a wheelchair, while one of her sons has Marie-Charcot-Tooth Disease, and both of them are going to need a ramp built," Tuck said. "If we have the volunteers show up who can help do those kinds of light repairs, we'll do that too."
Good Shepherd will provide buggies to carry trash back to the dumpsters and a light lunch at the end of the clean-up. For more information, call 304-428-1525 or 304-482-4330.
