Belleville woman charged with identity theft

PARKERSBURG -- A Belleville woman is being charged with identity theft after using another person's social security number to open a credit card account and spend money.

Alexis Nicole Edwards, 26, 7570 Lee Creek Road, Belleville, allegedly opened a PayPal credit card account in her name but under the social security number and birthdate of the victim, according to a criminal complaint filed with the Wood County Magistrate Court.

The victim and his wife heard about this when they applied for a mortgage loan. They were notified of the credit card because it had overdue payments, which decreased their credit score, the complaint said.

Edwards claimed the victim's information was auto-saved on the computer she used to apply for the card but the victim's wife said Edwards and the victim never shared a computer or lived together, according to the complaint.

The victim's brother allegedly gave Edwards the information which he got from the victim's wallet, the complaint said.

Edwards is being charged with identity theft and was released on a $5,000 surety bond.
