CHARLESTON -- Wood and Wirt were the only counties in the region in the gold level in the County Alert System map, according to the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources in its Monday morning update.
Six counties in the state were at gold, the third highest behind red and orange based on infection rates and percent positivity. Wetzel in the outer fringe of the region was orange, one of only six counties in the state to be at that level of severity. No counties in the state were in the red zone on the map.
All other counties in the region -- Pleasants, Jackson, Roane, Calhoun, Ritchie, Doddridge, Tyler and Gilmer -- were green, the lowest level on the alert map.
The map is based on percent of positivity and rate of incidence.
The infection rate in Wood County was at 18.3 per 100,000 people within the orange-level range, but the percent positivity was at 4.47 percent, in the gold range. The infection rate in Wirt County was 13.5 per 100,000 and the positivity rate is 6.36 percent, both within the gold level.
Active cases as of Monday in Wood and Wirt counties were at 208 and seven, respectively. In other counties, the numbers were 11 in Calhoun, 21 in Doddridge, 15 in Gilmer, 28 in Jackson, eight in Pleasants, 12 in Ritchie, eight in Roane, 27 in Tyler and 74 in Wetzel.
The department reported 5,613 active cases statewide with 182 new cases reported in the 24-hour period from Sunday to Monday mornings. No deaths were reported and the total remained at 2,325 since the pandemic began in March 2020.
The state has fully vaccinated 216,937 people.
Vaccination counts by total doses administered and percentage of population of local counties: Doddridge, 3,430, 40.6; Wetzel, 5,367, 35.7; Pleasants, 2,388, 32; Gilmer, 2,398, 30.7; Wirt, 1,666, 28.6; Calhoun, 2,006, 28.2; Roane, 3,835, 28; Tyler, 2,397, 27.9; Ritchie, 2,546, 26.7; Jackson, 6,853, 24; Wood, 19,052, 22.8.
Tucker and Pocahontas counties are the highest in terms of population vaccinated, 54.8 and 46.1 percent, respectively. The lowest counties are Jefferson and Berkeley at 14.5 and 16 percent, respectively.
Calhoun, Doddridge, Gilmer, Pleasants, Tyler and Wirt counties were among the 15 counties with the lowest vaccination registration numbers, Gov. Jim Justice said during his pandemic briefing on Monday. Justice encouraged residents from those counties to register for the shots.
Residents can register at vaccinate.wv.gov.
Other counties with low pre-registration numbers are Clay, Webster, Pocahontas, Grant, Pendleton, Braxton, Wyoming, Tucker and McDowell counties.
