GLENVILLE -- A Glenville State College assistant professor of language and literature has been named to the West Virginia Humanities Council program committee.
Amanda Chapman is one of four new citizen members elected to the committee. The others were: Jim Broomall, associate professor of history at Shepherd University and the director of the George Tyler Moore Center for the Study of the Civil War; Rachael Meads, professor of Appalachian culture, music and ethnomusicology at Shepherd University; and Sam Petsonk, a lawyer from Beckley.
The new members will serve a three-year term from June 1 to June 1, 2024.
"As a scholar and teacher of the humanities within academia, I'm looking forward to making a contribution to public humanities work as well," Chapman said.
Chapman has taught writing and literature since 2007 at the University of Alabama, the University of Pittsburgh and at Glenville State where she teaches British literature, children's literature, adolescent literature and critical reading and writing.
A specialist in 19th century British children's literature, Chapman has published articles in "The Lion and the Unicorn" and "Children's Literature." Scholarly interests include imperialism and literature, gender and sexuality studies and the history of selfhood.
Chapman has a doctorate in critical and cultural studies from the University of Pittsburgh, a master's in English from the University of Alabama and a bachelor's in English from Troy University. She has been a faculty member in the Department of Language and Literature since 2017.
The West Virginia Humanities Council is the state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities. The council budgets more than $800,000 for grants and programs each year and the program committee recommends funding decisions to the Humanities Council board of directors.
The 22-member committee includes 11 members from the council board and 11 citizens who represent education and the public.
