Counties set up vaccine clinics for at-risk patients

WEST UNION — As the COVID-19 vaccine is becoming more available to members of the public over 80 years of age, the outlying counties are holding vaccine clinics as it becomes available to them.

At the present time, the vaccine is only available for those over the age of 80 and some county health departments are only offering it to residents of that county.

The Doddridge County Health Department received its first shipment of the vaccine on Dec. 15 which was delivered by members of the National Guard, according to the Doddridge County Health Department Facebook page.

The first to be vaccinated were people who are directly involved with COVID response.

As of Tuesday afternoon, a few doses were still available and people over 80 and Doddridge County residents could call and make an appointment and it was reported more doses will become available soon.

The second injection will be available soon for the Doddridge County first responders who have already received the first shot. Fire departments, law enforcement, Department of Natural Resources and members of the state police were told to expect a call from the health department soon to schedule their vaccine appointment.

The Wetzel-Tyler County Health Department held its first vaccine clinic to its county residents over the age of 80 Monday. One hundred doses were available and were on a first come, first served basis.

Another vaccine clinic for Wetzel and Tyler County residents is scheduled for Thursday at 9:30 a.m. at the Paden City Middle School Gym by appointment only. People can call (304) 337-2001 ext. 101 to make an appointment. The health department will begin taking appointments for Thursday’s clinic today at 9 a.m.

The Jackson County Health Department reported Saturday that staff had traveled to Charleston to receive the doses but the hub had only received the antibodies and not the vaccine. It was reported Saturday they were expecting to receive the vaccine soon but no other updates were available as of deadline Tuesday.

As of Tuesday evening, no vaccine clinic was announced for Ritchie County but the MId-Ohio Valley Health Department said it was able to obtain the vaccine for all the counties it services and they are working on setting up drive through clinics this week.
