CHARLESTON -- Forty people including three from Wood and Ritchie counties are among the confirmed deaths since Friday morning from the virus where the count of confirmed fatalities in West Virginia was 978 as of Monday morning, according to the Department of Health and Human Resources.
Thirty people died from Friday to Sunday morning and another 10 died from Sunday to Monday morning, the department said in its pandemic update on Monday.
Fatalities announced on Saturday include 64-year-old man and an 81-year-old woman from Wood County and a 76-year-old woman from Ritchie County.
Statewide, other deaths confirmed since Friday were a 66-year-old man from Grant County, a 79-year-old man from Raleigh County, a 90-year-old man from Jefferson County, a 67-year-old man from Preston County, a 71-year-old man from Berkeley County, a 95-year-old woman from Berkeley County, a 76-year-old woman from Berkeley County, a 74-year-old woman from Berkeley County, an 86-year-old woman from Berkeley County, a 78-year-old woman from Kanawha County, a 69-year-old man from Greenbrier County, a 66-year-old man from Cabell County, an 82-year-old woman from Cabell County, a 95-year-old man from Putnam County, a 77-year-old man from Greenbrier County, a 75-year-old woman from McDowell County, a 95-year-old woman from Mason County, a 61-year-old woman from Mason County, a 66-year-old woman from Mineral County, a 101-year-old woman from Mineral County, a 96-year-old man from Mineral County, a 98-year-old woman from Mineral County, a 79-year-old man from Mingo County, a 67-year-old man from Mineral County, an 82-year-old man from Cabell County, a 75-year-old woman from Grant County, a 61-year-old woman from Putnam County, a 90-year-old woman from Marshall County, a 91-year-old man from Boone County, a 77-year-old man from Putnam County, a 93-year-old man from Kanawha County, an 82-year-old man from Brooke County, an 86-year-old woman from Lincoln County, an 85-year-old man from Cabell County, an 80-year-old man from Grant County, a 91-year-old man from Kanawha County and an 89-year-old man from Logan County.
"As we mourn the West Virginia lives lost to this devastating virus, we must not lose sight of our power to prevent additional deaths by following public health safety measures of wearing masks, washing hands, staying home when sick, and social distancing," department Secretary Bill J. Crouch said.
Of the 1,321,330 total confirmatory laboratory results received for the virus as of Sunday, 64,394, were positive cases, an increase of 1,177 positive cases from Sunday to Monday. Positive cases increased 1,514 from Friday to Saturday.
The daily positivity rate is 8.33 percent and the cumulative rate since the pandemic began is 4.10 percent.
Current active cases as of Monday was 21,076 with 720 people in a hospital, 199 in an intensive care unit and 82 on ventilators, an increase of 18, 11 and three since Sunday morning, respectively.

Wood County on Saturday was removed from red status and placed on orange status in the Department of Education pandemic map. Red and orange are the most restrictive, red the highest, for extracurricular activities and sports and require remote learning.
Ritchie, Wirt and Tyler counties were among the 14 red counties in the state.
Also orange were Doddridge and Jackson counties. Pleasants County was orange on Saturday on the school map, however, the county was elevated to red after it was listed as red in the separate DHHR County Alert System map was updated on Monday.
Calhoun, Gilmer and Roane counties are gold.

Ninth St., Williamstown; 8 a.m.-11 a.m. Wednesday, Coplin Health Systems, 483 Court St., Elizabeth; noon-3 p.m. Thursday, New Hope Baptist Church, 1777 Rosemar Road, Vienna; 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Friday, Mineral Wells Elementary School; noon-4 p.m. Friday, Ritchie Regional health Center, 135 S. Penn Ave., Harrisville.
The state listed testing events 1 p.m.-5 p.m. today at the Ravenswood Senior Center, 511 Washington St., Ravenswood; Wirt County, 8 a.m. to 11a.m. Wednesday at Coplin Health Systems, 483 Court St., Elizabeth, Pre-regiser at ipsumcovidresults.com; 9 a.m.-noon Thursday, Jackson County Health Department, 504 Church St., Ripley.
