West Virginia counts 34 new COVID-19 deaths

CHARLESTON -- The state of West Virginia has confirmed 34 deaths from the coronavirus in the 24-hour period between Tuesday and Wednesday mornings, according to the Wednesday update from the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources.

The count is at 1,318 confirmed deaths in West Virginia from the COVID-19 virus since the pandemic began in March.

Listed among the dead on Wednesday were an 87-year-old man from Mason County, a 78-year-old man from Hancock County, a 71-year-old woman from Hancock County, 90-year-old woman from Preston County, an 82-year-old woman from Cabell County, a 93-year-old man from Ohio County, a 62-year-old woman from Hancock County, a 74-year-old woman from Fayette County, an 88-year-old man from Lewis County, a 77-year-old woman from Wyoming County, a 61-year-old woman from McDowell County, a 93-year-old man from Preston County, an 81-year-old woman from Hancock County, a 71-year-old woman from Ohio County, an 81-year-old woman from Boone County, an 85-year-old woman from Kanawha County, a 72-year-old man from Raleigh County, a 33-year-old woman from Summers County, a 92-year-old man from Kanawha County, an 86-year-old woman from Brooke County, a 74-year-old woman from Kanawha County, an 88-year-old man from Logan County, a 76-year-old man from Logan County, an 81-year-old man from Cabell County, a 79-year-old man from Mercer County, an 81-year-old woman from Brooke County, an 82-year-old man from Hardy County, a 52-year-old woman from Kanawha County, a 63-year-old man from Kanawha County, a 95-year-old woman from Monongalia County, an 84-year-old woman from Greenbrier County, a 91-year-old woman from Jefferson County, a 91-year-old woman from Ohio County and a 46-year-old man from Kanawha County.

"The toll this virus has taken on our state also weighs heavily on our medical providers," department Secretary Bill J. Crouch said. "As we remember each life and each family, we also remember those fighting to save them."

The department in its Wednesday update reported 1,479,263 total confirmatory laboratory results have been received with 84,225 total positive cases, an increase of 1,452 infections from Tuesday. The daily positivity rate is 11.68 percent and the cumulative is 4.78 percent.

Of the 24,433 active cases, 797 people are in a hospital, 209 are in an intensive care unit and 93 are on a ventilator. Tuesday's count of 213 patients in an intensive care unit was the highest recorded in the pandemic.

The state has received 86,800 doses of vaccine and has administered 37,862 doses.

The Mid-Ohio Valley Health Department reported Wednesday receiving notification that it would be getting limited doses for those over 80. MOVHD officials said they are still determining how best to get those out after receiving them and will be announcing a plan within 48 hours.

Virus statistics for Mid-Ohio Valley counties as of Tuesday's update were:

* Calhoun: 21 active cases, 107 recovered, 116 cumulative confirmed, 12 cumulative probable, 4,992 tests, 0 deaths.

* Doddridge: 44 active, 193 recovered, 188 cumulative confirmed, 52 cumulative probable, 3,603 tests, 3 deaths.

* Gilmer: 93 active, 297 recovered, 309 cumulative confirmed, 82 cumulative probable, 6,272 tests, 1 death.

* Jackson: 237 active, 876 recovered, 1,050 cumulative confirmed, 92 cumulative probable, 17,660 tests, 29 deaths.

* Pleasants: 308 active, 251 recovered, 486 cumulative confirmed, 78 cumulative probable, 4,932 tests, 5 deaths.

* Ritchie: 60 active, 263 recovered, 277 cumulative confirmed, 53 cumulative probable, 5,823 tests, 7 deaths.

* Roane: 43 active, 242 recovered, 273 cumulative confirmed, 17 cumulative probable, 10,426 tests, 5 deaths.

* Tyler: 84 active, 267 recovered, 244 cumulative confirmed, 109 cumulative probable, 5,148 tests, 2 deaths.

* Wetzel: 104 active, 569 recovered, 426 cumulative confirmed, 263 cumulative probable, 8,837 tests, 16 deaths.

* Wirt: 52 active, 163 recovered, 170 cumulative confirmed, 46 cumulative probable, 2,737 tests, 1 death.

* Wood: 1,044 active, 3,786 recovered, 3,694 cumulative confirmed, 1,177 probable, 60,580 tests, 41 deaths.
