BELPRE -- A new fund in memory of an animal lover was recently established at Boxers Bed and Biscuits to help people with emergency vet bills for their animals.
Ciara Petri was a dedicated employee of Boxers Bed and Biscuits for two years and recently lost her battle of cancer.
Facilities manager Lori Shultz said they were unaware of Petri's wishes until they read her obituary. After speaking with Petri's boyfriend, he said it was her wish to be able to help people take care of their fur babies.
"Instead of flowers she wanted everybody to donate to this fund, she was such an animal lover," Shultz said. "She just wanted to do something for the pets in her memory."
The fund, titled "Ciara's Grace," is designed to help people who may not have the funds to take their pet to the vet if they're having a major health issue.
Shultz said sometimes people aren't able to afford the testing and blood work necessary to diagnose pet illnesses and they end up having to put the animal down; this fund is to help with those veterinary visits in life or death situations.
"I think it happens a lot more than what we know. (People) love their animals and they want to take care of them, sometimes they just don't have the funds, especially now," Shultz said.
Boxers Meds and Fixits is the veterinary service within the business and it will work with the people and pets who use this fund.
"We always accept new clients, we would just have to register you. You don't have long wait periods and we can usually get you in that day or the next day," Shultz said.
Petri worked at Boxers Bed and Biscuits as a receptionist for around two years and Shultz said she had such a lovely and fun personality.
"She was just so bubbly and happy, we put her on the front desk because she was such a lovely person. She was taken too soon," she said. "She was always smiling and loving on the dogs. She was very good at her job, you could just tell she loved animals. She didn't see a dog or a cat she didn't love on."
Boxers Bed and Biscuits had a benefit for Ciara's Grace and another employee, Jacquie Duley, who is currently fighting cancer. The staff held a photo shoot to give people an opportunity to bring in their pets and have their picture taken professionally for $25. Half of the proceeds went to Ciara's Grace and the other half went to benefit Duley.
About $1,300 was raised from the photoshoots, which were done by appointment to maintain safety from COVID.
