CHARLESTON -- Eight people have died from the virus since Wednesday morning in West Virginia, raising the death toll in the pandemic to 480 in the state, the Department of Health Human Resources said Thursday.
Also, the state reported a record single-day high of 560 new positive cases and record highs for people in the hospital or in an intensive care unit.
The department reported the deaths occurring in the 24-hour period from Wednesday to Thursday morning of a 91-year-old woman from Wetzel County, an 86-year-old man from Cabell County, an 81-year-old woman from Cabell County, an 89-year-old woman from Mercer County, a 67-year-old man from Mercer County, a 71-year-old woman from Mercer County, an 82-year-old man from Putnam County and a 90-year-old woman from Summers County.
The state's condolences were expressed by department Secretary Bill J. Crouch.
"The loss of more West Virginians weighs heavily on our hearts," Crouch said. "As West Virginians, we must not tire of preventive measures that ensure the health and safety of our friends, family and neighbors. I urge you to continue wearing your mask, frequent hand washing and social distancing."
The department in its Thursday morning coronavirus update said 814,774 total confirmatory laboratory results have been received with 26,547 total positive cases, an increase of 560 positive cases since Wednesday morning, a record daily high for new positive cases.
The daily positivity rate is 3.94 percent.
Active cases total 5,897 with 281 people in a hospital, 93 in intensive care units and 31 on ventilators.
Cases per local county are: Calhoun (37), Doddridge (75), Gilmer (71), Jackson (438), Pleasants (40), Ritchie (65), Roane (117), Tyler (68), Wirt (59) and Wood (856).
