CHARLESTON -- Active cases of the virus increased over 400 from Wednesday to Thursday in West Virginia, according to the Department of Health and Human Resources,
The state in Thursday's COVID-19 pandemic update said there were 8,187 active cases in West Virginia, an increase of 416 from 7,771 in the department's Wednesday morning's update. The record was on Wednesday when an increase of 885 cases were reported.
Also, the state reported an increase of 696 in the total number of positive test results received in the 24-hour period between Wednesday and Thursday, from 30,201 to 30,897. Total confirmatory lab tests received were 884,889 as of Thursday, the DHHR reported.
Two deaths were confirmed between Wednesday and Thursday, a 95-year-old woman from Marshall County and an 87-year-old man from Cabell County. Deaths total 555 in West Virginia.
"Each loss of a West Virginian is a heartbreak to a family and to our state," department Secretary Bill J. Crouch said. "I urge you to continue to follow the health guidelines to keep your family, friends and neighbors safe."
Confirmed cases in the hospital total 306, of which 93 patients are in an intensive care unit and 34 are on ventilators, an increase of 29, eight and six, respectively, from Wednesday to Thursday.
Mingo County remained the only county listed as red in the County Alert Map, the most restrictive category. Wood, Tyler and Jackson counties are orange, No. 2 in severity, and Wirt, Ritchie and Pleasants were yellow and Roane, Calhoun, Doddridge and Gilmer were green, the least restrictive.
Cases per local county are: Calhoun (41), Clay (92), Doddridge (83), Fayette (893), Gilmer (166), Jackson (482), Pleasants (50), Ritchie (79), Roane (127), Tyler (95), Wirt (63), and Wood (1,285).
