CHARLESTON -- The state Wednesday reported 885 new cases of the virus over a 24-hour period in West Virginia, the largest single-day increase since the pandemic began, the Department of Health and Human Services said.
Also reported were the deaths of another seven residents in the state, raising the death toll from the COVID-19 coronavirus to 553 in West Virginia.
The department, in the 24 hour period after Tuesday, has confirmed the deaths of a 71-year-old man from Cabell County, a 67-year-old man from Mingo County, a 70-year-old man from Cabell County, an 84-year-old woman from Cabell County, a 41-year-old man from Raleigh County, an 80-year-old man from Wyoming County and a 71-year-old woman from Kanawha County.
As of Wednesday morning, there are 7,771 active cases, an increase of 500 between Tuesday and Wednesday in the reporting period, with 277 people in a hospital, 85 in an intensive care unit and 28 on ventilators.
The state has received 871,867 total confirmatory laboratory results with 30,201 total positive cases, an increase of 885 between Tuesday and Wednesday, the department said.
Cases per local county are: Calhoun (41), Doddridge (83), Jackson (478), Pleasants (49), Ritchie (77), Roane (125), Tyler (94), Wirt (61) and Wood (1,233).
