WSCC’s med lab tech program sees positive results despite pandemic

MARIETTA -- The spring 2020 graduating class for Washington State Community College's Medical Laboratory Technology program posted a perfect passage rate on the American Society of Clinical Pathologists Board of Registry Certification.
Program Director Steve Temesvary said he was pleased with the outcome, noting graduates were faced with an unprecedented learning situation because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
An increase in technology use in the classroom may have contributed to the success rate, Temesvary said.
"When we moved to digital, it allowed our students to have all of their materials available any time they wanted to study," he said. "As long as their iPad was charged, they could access their books. I feel like that played a big part in the success of these students."
Temesvary said the MLT job market is strong and a number of program graduates are employed by local health care organizations. They can also find work in the manufacturing sector.
