VIENNA -- Vienna officials closed down traffic in both directions on Grand Central Avenue after a transformer pole caught on fire and a water line broke on Thursday afternoon in Vienna.
The incident happened at the Speedway station at 1604 Grand Central Ave., Vienna.
Emergency crews on the scene reported the pole was completely compromised, prompting officials to close the road to northbound and southbound traffic as crews moved in.
While trying to repair the blown transformer, a Mon Power vehicle accidentally hit a water line, which brought out the Vienna Water Department to help correct the issue.
"We got a call of a powerline transformer blew on the fire pole that broke. After we got here the top of the pole did go ahead and break the rest of the way," said Vienna Fire Chief Steve Scholl. "The lines are not totally on Grand Central Avenue but they're hanging low and the pole was very compromised.
"So we stopped all north and southbound Grand Central traffic. I would assume it's weather related with all the rain, but I can't verify anything," Scholl said Thursday evening.
In a separate incident, an accident occurred around noon Thursday on Interstate 77 in the southbound lane near the Seventh Street exit when a truck rolled over due to weather conditions. The Wood County 911 center confirmed that no individuals were hurt in the accident.
