PARKERSBURG -- The Parkersburg Utility Board will flush water lines starting tonight and continuing through early Sunday morning.
"Flushing of the water lines is done to remove the buildup of iron and manganese oxides from the lines and to inspect the operation of the fire hydrants in the water distribution system," PUB Manager Eric Bennett said in a news release. "Water line flushing helps to maintain the quality of water provided to the customers of Parkersburg's water system."
The process may result in some residents experiencing a temporary discoloration of water, if water is used at the same time flushing is being done in the area, he said.
It's recommended that laundry not be done while flushing is taking place in the area, the release said. If laundry gets stained, it should not be dried but rewashed using a product formulated for iron stain removal.
If customers experience discolored water, they are advised to run cold water until it clears, the release said. The customer should be satisfied the water is running clear before using hot water.
Flushing will start at 10 p.m. today and continue around the clock until the work is finished, expected to happen around 3 a.m. Sunday.
Flushing begins on 19th Street and will move north on Dudley Avenue and westerly to the Ohio River. A second crew will simultaneously move east of Dudley Avenue and south toward the Little Kanawha River by 11 a.m. Saturday.
Relief crews should start in the area of City Park and move across the Little Kanawha River to south Parkersburg, continuing south toward Pettyville.
