West Virginia reports six new COVID-19 deaths

CHARLESTON — Another six deaths from the virus over a 24-hour period have been confirmed by the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources, the agency reported Friday.

The DHHR said an 86-year-old woman from Logan County, a 90-year-old man from Kanawha County, a 93-year-old man from Raleigh County, a 77-year-old man from Putnam County, a 59-year-old man from Fayette County and a 79-year-old man from Kanawha County died since Thursday.

The death toll is at 263 in West Virginia as of Friday, the anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks in the United States in 2001.

“As we honor the lives of these West Virginians, we also remember those Americans who perished on this solemn anniversary 19 years ago,” Secretary Bill J. Crouch of the Department of Health and HuDHHR Cabinet Secretary.

The state also reported 12,174 total cases statewide as of Friday morning, an increase of 157 over the 24-hour period from Thursday morning, and 2,849 active cases. More than 471,000 tests have been performed.

Of the 147 people who were in the hospital Friday morning, 56 were in intensive care units and 20 were on ventilators, the department said.

Monongalia County remains the only county in the red category in the alert system for school operations with more than 25 cases per 100,000 people. Red is the worst.

Calhoun County, which moved to orange from Wednesday to Thursday, remained orange, second worst. Jackson, Roane and Doddridge counties are yellow.

Wood, Gilmer, Pleasants, Ritchie, Wirt and Tyler counties are green with fewer than three cases per 100,000 people.

Gov. Jim Justice on Friday also announced a change in the color coding because of the increase in virus cases across the state. Any county that goes into the orange will have to close for in-person school.

Cases reported from the last reporting period in local counties are per county, as reported by the state, are Calhoun (21) no change, Doddridge (15) up one, Gilmer (19) no change, Jackson (224) down five, Pleasants (15), no change, Ritchie (9), no change, Roane (38) down one, Tyler (15) no change, Wirt (8) no change, and Wood (329) up two.
