CHARLESTON -- More than 200 new positive cases of the virus over a 24-hour period in have been reported by a state agency in West Virginia for the second time this week.
The Department of Health and Human Resources reported Thursday morning 10,845 positive cases, up 203 from 10,642 on Wednesday. The agency earlier this week reported 257 new cases in a 24-hour period from Monday to Tuesday period, among the highest increases since the pandemic started.
Seven more people were reported to have died, according to the department's daily COVID-19 update on Thursday. The total is now 237.
The deceased are a 64-year old woman from Kanawha County, an 86-year old man from Kanawha County, a 95-year old woman from Mercer County, a 60-year old woman from Kanawha County, a 92-year old woman from Kanawha County, a 95-year old man from Randolph County and a 71-year old woman from Lincoln County.
"We grieve, together with their families, the tragic loss of these West Virginians," said department Secretary Bill J. Crouch.
Locally, 12 cases have been reported in Calhoun County, seven in Doddridge County, 20 in Gilmer County, 205 in Jackson County, 15 in Pleasants County, six in Ritchie County, 33 in Roane County, 15 in Tyler County, eight in Wirt County and 313 in Wood County.
