West Virginia officials connect Wood County virus outbreak to church

PARKERSBURG — Wood County is one of three counties in West Virginia with an active COVID-19 outbreak related to a church.

Gov. Jim Justice referenced the active outbreaks in Wood, Cabell and Taylor counties during his coronavirus briefing Wednesday. The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources said Thursday the local outbreak was reported Aug. 11 and is different from a church outbreak reported here in July.

Further questions were directed to the Mid-Ohio Valley Health Department, a spokesperson for whom said Thursday afternoon that additional information was not immediately available. The Health Department has not disclosed which church was affected by the July outbreak.

According to DHHR’s daily update on COVID-19 statistics, Wood County has had 266 cases of the virus reported.
