Owner preserves historic Sistersville structure

SISTERSVILLE — Another historical building in Sistersville will be preserved and celebrated for its heritage and impact on the town.

Named the Joshua Russell House, owner Terry Wiley said it has a rich history that dates back to the early 19th century.

Built in 1832, the home was built by its namesake, Joshua Russell who came to the United States from Ireland.

Russell was a merchant who landed in Sistersville due to flooding while he was trying to travel further south for his work.

Wiley said Russell and his brother liked where they stayed so they decided to stay and purchased the land for the home for $50.

Over the years, the building served as a newspaper office, a liquor store, a brothel and a restaurant, among other things.

In the 1980s, the house was purchased to save it from being torn down and when the owner took over, the building was restored.

“It’s been very well persevered,” Wiley said.

The building is situated along the river and is a focal point where the Sistersville Ferry docks.

Wiley said he is open for suggestions for what to do with the building but he would like to make it a destination to view artwork, sample wine and hold events like weddings, bridal showers or birthday parties.

Next Spring, Wiley hopes to open the building.
