MORGANTOWN -- At least 10 students at West Virginia University are among the 13 new cases testing positive for the COVID-19 virus, the university and the Monongalia County Health Department reported.
Investigations and contact tracing are ongoing and several of the students are known to have been on the WVU Health Sciences Morgantown and Eastern Campuses in the last seven days, the university said. No patients have been exposed to any of the affected students.
The health department and the university have been working together to contain spread of the virus. Local health officials are retracing the affected students' movements and outreach is being made to those with whom the students may have been in close contact.
Effective immediately, the following steps are being implemented:
* The individuals who tested positive have been isolated.
* The health department is contact tracing to alert anyone who may have been in close contact with the individual in recent days.
* Known close contacts of those who tested positive have been quarantined and will be monitored for the next 14 days.
* The affected areas at both Health Sciences Centers will be undergoing a deep cleaning.
WVU and the health department will closely monitor the potential impacts of the virus on campus and the community and will be prepared to institute additional precautions as necessary.
