Guilty plea made in VA Medical Center murders

A former nursing assistant pleaded guilty today to the murder of seven patients at the Louis A. Johnson VA Medical Center in Clarksburg.

Reta Mays of Clarksburg was charged with seven counts of second-degree murder and one count of assault with the intent to commit second degree murder. She appeared in U.S. District Court in Clarksburg where she entered the plea.

She was charged with administering non-prescribed injections of insulin into the victims, causing their deaths.

Mays, 46, was accused of killing Robert Edge Sr., 82, Robert Kozul, 89, Archie Edgell, 84, George Shaw, 81, a patient identified as WA.H., 96, Felix K. McDermott, 82, and Raymond Golden, 88, and the assault of a patient identified as R.R.P., 92,

She faces up to life in prison for the murder charges and up to 20 years on the assault count. Judge Thomas Kleeh told her parole was abolished in the federal system. The government recommended the maximum sentences to be consecutive.

Mays was remanded to the Northern Regional Jail.
