PARKERSBURG -- The Wood County Commission approved plans for a new housing subdivision and handled other business at their regular meeting on Monday.
The commission unanimously approved Phase II of Nelson Hill Addition in Union District.
County Administrator Marty Seufer said this project is a year old, being approved by the Wood County Planning Commission on May 1, 2019 contingent on the establishment of a Homeowner's Association to be able to handle road maintenance covering lots 9 to 15.
It was established and met the legal guidelines, Seufer said.
"They are ready to roll," he said. "They have done everything we have asked them to do."
Meanwhile, Wood County Commission President Blair Couch said COVID-19 infections are seeing some increases in the area.
Wood County has at 56 positive cases. Ritchie County has two, Roane County has 11, Calhoun has three, Wirt County has four and Pleasants County has three.
People are beginning to travel to North and South Carolina and other places down south with officials noting that few places are strictly enforcing any kind of health guidelines or regulations.
The Mid-Ohio Valley Health Department is reminding people to be vigilant if visiting an area with higher community transmission or a "hot spot." They are reminding people to social distance, wear a mask when in public and sanitize hands and surfaces often.
"People need to be vigilant," Couch said of people continually protecting themselves and others.
The state has issued warning for people traveling south to potential "hot spot" areas which is reiterated by local health departments, he said.
Also at Monday's meeting, Seufer said the new steeple is expected to be put on the Wood County Courthouse sometime next week.
"It could be as early as (next) Monday if we are lucky," Seufer said.
The work, being done by Murray Sheet Metal, includes a steeple-like crown on top of the tower like the one the building originally had for years prior to 1953 when it was removed. The work will also include roof repairs, climbing stairwell reconstruction up to the tower and other work associated with restoring the bell tower.
The new steeple will be lifted up by crane and secured to the tower. The new steeple weighs around 7,000 pounds, officials said.
"They are up there prepping that (Monday)," Seufer said.
In other business, the commission unanimously approved reappointing Andy Hartleben to the Solid Waste Authority.
