Authorities suspect pair of stealing truck, camper

Thomas Roy Holcomb

SPENCER — One man was arrested and a warrant issued for another over the theft of a truck and camper by Calhoun County authorities.

According to a criminal complaint filed with the Roane County Magistrate Court, Thomas Roy Holcomb, 53, 48 Carr St., Clay, W.Va., was charged with burglary, grand and petit larceny, bringing stolen property into the state and destruction of property.

A resident called law enforcement to report a truck pulling a newer model camper was causing damage on his property, the complaint said.

Roane County Sheriff Todd Cole said Holcomb and another suspect, Justin Brown, were driving on back roads in the county when they came across a large tree in the road that had blown over during a storm.

After unhooking the camper from a truck, the two attempted to remove the tree themselves and in the process, tore up the resident’s yard. The resident asked them to leave and they proceeded to drive on back roads when they came to a dead end, Cole said.

The two then abandoned the vehicles, Cole said. The camper, a 2020 Coachman Catalina, was reported stolen earlier that morning and the truck was reported stolen from the Washington County area, Cole said.

“We’re unsure what their tie is to that area in Ohio,” he said.

The camper was broken into and damaged when it was stolen, the complaint said.

Law enforcement was able to obtain video evidence of the two men together after they found receipts in the truck and contacted those stores for their camera footage, Cole said.

Warrants are out for Brown’s arrest. Cole said he has warrants out from many different counties.

The criminal complaint said Brown was believed to be driving the truck in one of the recovered videos.

Anyone who has any further information on Brown can call the Roane County Sheriff’s Department at (304) 927-3410.

Holcomb is being held in the Central Regional Jail on a $100,000 cash bond.
