PARKERSBURG – Toll collection on the Memorial Bridge will resume Wednesday morning.
The City of Parkersburg stopped charging tolls March 22 as part of its efforts to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus. Many toll collectors are 65 or older, a group more susceptible to serious illness as a result of the virus. Parkersburg Mayor Tom Joyce said the move also allowed the city to shift personal protective equipment that would have been used there to employees in the police, fire and sanitation departments, who have remained on the job while other city services were curtailed and facilities closed.
Other city facilities reopened to the public this morning.
“When the bridge employees were made aware of the other city employees returning to their regular work location and assignments, an overwhelming majority of the bridge personnel contacted their supervisor volunteering to return to work,” Parkersburg Mayor Tom Joyce said in an email this morning. “We have made preparations and verified that we have the necessary and appropriate supplies and personal protective equipment to provide for proper safety of the employees.”
