Wood County BOE receives sneak peek of new WCS site, app

PARKERSBURG -- Officials were given a sneak peek Tuesday of Wood County Schools' new website and app.
The Wood County Board of Education last month approved a contract with Arkansas-based Apptegy to redesign the district's online presence. Superintendent Will Hosaflook on Tuesday shared screenshots of the app and possible design for the new website, both of which focus on ease of use.
Hosaflook said the app would allow parents and residents to receive announcements, news items and school information in one place. The app can be customized to receive announcements for particular schools or grade levels.
Parents can even see daily lunch menus, he said.
"It's really going to rebrand our whole system, how we get information out to the public," Hosaflook said.
Hosaflook said the web site will likely have a three-fold area which would feature a live feed, events and news.
"Once you post something on the live feed, it automatically sends out to Facebook and Twitter, but also updates the app. And you can get push notifications for specific schools," he said.
Each school also would have individual pages to customize. Though the layout would remain the same as the main site, each school could add graphics, photos and change the color scheme.
"They can own their webpage," Hosaflook said.
"It's building one culture," said board member Justin Raber.
Hosaflook said the final look of the web page had not yet been decided
"We're still in the design phase right now," Hosaflook said.
Board president Rick Olcott asked about a possible timeline for the new site and app. Hosaflook said he believed both would be in use in the fall.
"I think implementation will happen throughout the summer, because we are going to have to train principals," Hosaflook said.
The information Tuesday was part of a brief superintendent's update during the board's online meeting. A more formal presentation will be made to the board at a future meeting, and no action was taken Tuesday.
