PORTSMOUTH, Ohio -- A student at Shawnee State University suspected to have the COVID-19 coronavirus tested negative, according to the Portsmouth City Health Department, the university said on Wednesday.
Two other students suspected to have the virus were quarantined out of the area and the Ohio Department of Health determined they do not need further testing, the university said.
Shawnee State President Jeff Bauer announced classes will continue on schedule this week, but will be canceled next week to give faculty time to transition to online format.
The university said classes that were already online at the beginning of the semester are not canceled and will continue on regular schedule. Labs, clinicals, special internships, student teaching and other activities related to certification requirements are not canceled next week and will continue as scheduled this week. Long-term, these activities will remain organized at the discretion of the instructor.
All in-person classes will resume in an online format on March 23 and will continue in this format through April 12.
Faculty will communicate with each student on their course rosters to confirm class activities and schedules.
All university offices and services will remain on regular schedule through the end of the semester to provide services for students.
Housing will remain open and students may continue living on campus. Key student services, including the Clark Memorial Library, SSU Health Clinic, SSU Dining in the Bear's Den, all safety services, Student Success Center, Career Services and Student Business Center, will maintain regular hours.
Due to high-traffic areas, the Student Rec Center and Warsaw Aquatic Center are closed until further notice.
Students are being asked to be diligent about checking their mymail.shawnee.edu accounts for faculty and campus communications.
University-sponsored travel for staff, faculty and students, whether domestic or international, is prohibited until further notice. Staff, faculty and students are requested to report their non-university travel outside of the immediate area to travel@shawnee.edu
