PARKERSBURG -- A number of events in the area have been canceled due to concerns about the COVID-19 coronavirus.
Several events scheduled for today, including the Smoot Spring Sing at the Smoot Theatre and the Fiber Arts Fair at Marietta's Campus Martius Museum, have been canceled.
The Parkersburg Art Center held an opening reception for its new exhibit Friday evening, but the weekly Arty Party and the Geppetto Woodcarvers demonstration scheduled for today have been canceled, as has the Art-O-Rama scheduled for March 21.
The Actors Guild of Parkersburg canceled its Friday night performance of "Sense and Sensibility," along with today's performance. Both were scheduled to take place at the theater at West Virginia University at Parkersburg due to ongoing renovation work at the Guild Playhouse in downtown Parkersburg.
All large events at the university are postponed until further notice. The Guild announced on Facebook that it would be contacting ticketholders to issue a full refund.
The Mid-Ohio Valley Players in Marietta announced it would be postponing its production of Agatha Christie's "And Then There Were None," which was scheduled to begin its run Friday and today. The new dates will be announced when they have been determined.
In Marietta, the Ohio History Connection has required all of its sites -- including Campus Martius Museum -- to close out of care for the health of visitors, volunteers and community at large. Campus Martius Museum will be closed to the public effective today and will reopen to the public as soon as it receives confirmation from OHC. All March programming has been canceled but the museum plans to reschedule its American History Lecture Series and Volunteer Recruitment and Orientation at a later date.
McFriends Fellowship Group of Wood County canceled its breakfast meeting on March 18 at Emmanuel Baptist Church in Parkersburg.
The Wood County Democratic Party postponed its annual dinner that was scheduled for March 21 at the Nemesis Shrine Temple. A new date was unavailable.
A soup, clothing and other items sale at the South Parkersburg United Methodist Church originally scheduled for March 21 has been canceled due to the virus situation. It will rescheduled at a later date.
The West Virginia Symphony Orchestra in Charleston has postponed a concert scheduled for today because of COVID-19 coronavirus concerns.
The show, which featured cellist Zuill Bailey, was scheduled at the Clay Center in Charleston.
"Based on the governor's request not to hold events with large crowds because of ongoing concerns surrounding the coronavirus, we decided it was in the best interest of our patrons' and musicians' health and safety to postpone the concert," symphony President Joe Tackett said.
The concert will be rescheduled and details will be announced when available.
Other concert-related events planned for Saturday, including a Master Class with Bailey, a Patron Trip meeting and a pre-concert lecture and reception, also will not be held.
The symphony will continue to evaluate the evolving situation. The next scheduled performance of the Symphony is E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial Movie with Live Orchestra on March 28.
Ticket buyers have two options, to attend the rescheduled concert or exchange the tickets for an upcoming concert by calling the Clay Center Box Office at 304 561-3570.

The symphony is celebrating its 80th season.
In other cancellations, the March 29 performance of Mountain Stage at the West Virginia University Creative Arts Center has been canceled due to the suspension of in-person classes and college events in response to the coronavirus.
