Chancey, Leach honored by Vienna

VIENNA -- Vienna Mayor Randy Rapp presented certificates of achievement for Deloris Chancey and Mary Leach for their years of service to the city of Vienna and residents of West Virginia during the AARP meeting March 6 in Vienna.
Because Chancey passed away Feb. 19, her daughters Bonita "Bonnie" Eaton and Angela Westmoreland accepted her certificate.
Leach is secretary of the local chapter of the AARP, or American Association of Retired Persons, which meets on the first Friday of the month at 1 p.m. at Vienna Senior Center on 29th Street.
Chancey was elected president of the Mid-Ohio Valley AARP Chapter 5181 in January 2000. She had served as president of the organization for the past 20 years.
Chancey, 87, of Vienna had planned to resign as president of the AARP chapter at the Feb. 7 meeting, but the meeting was canceled because of a snowstorm.
"She loved being president but her health was failing," Eaton said.
Chancey passed away at home surrounded by family before she could be honored at the March meeting.
Eaton said she and her sister were proud to accept their mother's award on March 6.
Chancey had received a surprise birthday party at the Vienna Community Building, attended by 77 people, when she turned 87 last November. She enjoyed dancing, singing karaoke and sewing. Chancey made bags for those using walkers to carry items in.
Rapp spoke about Chancey and Leach's achievements, including being officers of the AARP Chapter 5181, senators of the Silver Haired Legislature, and attending Senior Week conference workshops.
Chancey was on the Board of Directors of the Wood County Senior Center for 10 years.
At the March meeting Rapp showed the Don Whitlatch print of two golden eagles, dedicated to Chancey and Leach for their years of service to AARP. The print will be framed and displayed in the Vienna Senior Center.
