BELPRE -- A 6-year-old Belpre boy has died after being hit by a car Sunday morning.
Mehkai Griffith Striblin was injured just before noon Sunday in front of his house on Campus Drive, Belpre Police Chief Terry Williams said. It appears the boy "stepped out into traffic and was struck by the car," he said.
The accident remains under investigation, but Williams said no charges are anticipated.
Griffith Striblin was taken to WVU Medicine Camden Clark Medical Center, then flown by helicopter to WVU Medicine Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown, Williams said. He was pronounced dead Tuesday afternoon, the chief said.
Griffith Striblin was a kindergartener at Belpre Elementary School, where additional support services were in place Monday and Tuesday, Belpre City Schools Superintendent Jeff Greenley said.
"Our entire organization was devastated, and (we send) our thoughts and prayers to the family," he said. "It's a member of our family, a member of our community that's not with us. We've been leaning on each other and trying to process."
Fundraisers were being planned and posted on social media to help the family with funeral costs.
Belpre Police responded to another incident involving a child injured by a vehicle Monday afternoon.
Sgt. Joe Fields said a 10-year-old boy was playing on a scooter in a driveway on Norris Avenue when he "inadvertently went out into the street and struck the front side of" a 2014 Nissan Altima.
The boy was seen at the Emergency Department at the Memorial Health System's Belpre Campus before being taken to Nationwide Children's Hospital in Columbus. Fields said the boy's injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.
No citation is expected out of the Monday incident, which Fields described as "an unfortunate accident."
