GRANTSVILLE — The town of Grantsville in Calhoun County is hoping to be chosen for HGTV’s new show “Home Town Takeover” for a chance to give the town a facelift.

City council member Derek Villers heard about the show on social media; he will submit an application on behalf of Grantsville.

The show centers around Ben and Erin Napier, a husband and wife who work to keep the original charm of older houses and buildings while giving them a fresh look.

“This couple is bringing homes back to life and making sure their small town’s future is as bright as their past,” the HGTV website said.

Villers said Grantsville meets all the application requirements; the population has to be less than 40,000, it has to have houses or architecture longing to be revealed and a main street that needs a facelift.

“Most of these small cities and towns in West Virginia, they’re really underfunded. It’s a really big deal to get something like this to bless a small town like ours,” Villers said.

If selected, the downtown area would be spruced up along with any other buildings or homes that need it within the city limits.

“In our town, there are actually some beautiful homes that have great bones and structure but will need an internal makeover,” Villers said.

Because of the lack of zoning laws, Villers said there’s a possibility Grantsville will be chosen.

To apply, they will submit a slideshow with a voiceover outlining the areas they want to improve and any ideas they have for the updates.

Villers scheduled a public meeting for Monday at 7 p.m. at 362 Main St. in Grantsville to gather ideas and suggestions from the community.

“We are doing it more seriously with more thought and input from all the community members so they can see we came together. We made a plan and we took this thing seriously,” Villers said.

So far, Villers said positive feedback is coming from the community.

“We have a bunch of people in the community that were interested in it. We have a huge turnout of people showing their love and interest in it,” he said.
