PARKERSBURG -- While eight babies were born before the ball dropped on New Year's Eve, ending not only 2019, but the decade, only one baby decided to make his first appearance on New Year's Day at WVU Medicine Camden Clark Medical Center.

Dana and Brenda Bourne, both 22 of Ripley, weren't expecting to spend New Year's Day at the hospital since Brenda's due date wasn't until Jan. 28.

"I was going to be induced on the 21st," she said. "The last time I talked to the doctor, we discussed that."

But Tyler Joseph, the Bourne's third child, had other plans.

Brenda said as they drove from Ripley to the hospital, she was having contractions. "We got here at noon and he came at 4:22 p.m."

She said she was ready. "I was in a hurry to get him out because my blood pressure was really high."

Other than the blood pressure issue at the end, it had been a good, easy pregnancy for her.

The newborn weighed 6 pounds 9 ounces, and his 3-year-old brother and 2-year-old sister were eagerly awaiting him at home.

"They are with my mom," Brenda said. "They've seen pictures of him and I video chatted with them."

She said even though the children are both young, she didn't think there will be any jealousy. "My daughter will be a little mom to him. She will want to hold him all the time. They will both be a big help."

Brenda's mom lives in Bluefield, W.Va., and her father in Ripley. Dana's parents live in Calhoun County.

Brenda said Tyler will be her last child. "I think I'm done now."

The hospital's auxiliary team will be presenting the family with a special gift basket for Tyler's New Year's Day arrival.
