PARKERSBURG -- A demonstration in opposition to the Trump administration escalating hostilities and potentially starting a war with Iran will be held Thursday at Parkersburg City Park.
The event will be held from 5 to 6 p.m. in the area of the war memorials near the pond, according to Eric Engle, an organizer. The demonstration is sponsored by Engle and Wood County Indivisible.
The United States last week killed Gen. Qassem Soleimani, top Iranian military commander. President Donald Trump ordered the drone strike on Soleimani that also killed several members of the Revolutionary Guard and militia leaders who were in a convoy near the international airport in Baghdad.
The assassination heightened tensions in the Middle East and Iran has vowed revenge.
Engle expects around 20 to 30 people because of the short notice in organizing the demonstration. Participants do not have to RSVP and everyone is welcome to attend, Engle said.
Several speakers are planned, including the Revs. Steve Peck and Shauna Hyde, ministers from Parkersburg, he said. A megaphone will be available for anyone who wants to speak, Engle said.
In the meantime, a location in Parkersburg has been set for the anti-impeachment rally on Saturday to support Trump. The rally was announced last week.
Sponsored by the Wood County Republican Party Executive Committee, the anti-impeachment rally will be held 2-3 p.m. Saturday at Murdoch Avenue and Lakeview Drive in the area around Birkenstock's, Buffalo Wild Wings and Astorg Motors, according to Roger Conley, chairman of the Republican Party.
The party also will do voter registrations, Conley said.
"If you are not registered to vote, we can do that for you," Conley said. "If you are not happy with your party affiliation and would like to switch to Republican as thousands of others are doing all across the country, we would love to help you do that as well."
