MINERAL WELLS — A 6-year-old girl was taken by helicopter to a Morgantown hospital Wednesday evening after an accident involving a riding lawnmower.

The accident occurred around 7:53 p.m. Wednesday at a residence on Chesterville Road in Mineral Wells, Wood County Sheriff Steve Stephens said. The girl’s father was using the mower, and the child came up behind it, unbeknownst to him. Her foot became caught under it when the father backed up the mower, Stephens said.

The child was conscious when deputies were at the scene, he said. She was taken by ambulance to Mineral Wells Elementary School, where a medical helicopter landed to take her to J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown, Stephens said.
