WILLIAMSTOWN -- Williamstown City Council unanimously passed the 2020 fiscal year budget, with the condition that any excess carryover will be earmarked for street paving, Tuesday evening.
After council passed the budget, council member Jim Stage asked about several old ordinances concerning no parking on either side of the street that he noticed didn't make it into the newly codified code.
City Attorney Blaine Myers explained he had merged all the ordinances into one, and it could be adopted on the first reading, then amend it if needed.
This discussion will be carried over into the next City Council meeting after a map of the town can be checked to be sure all the no parking zones are covered.
Building official David VanHorn said he would like council to adopt the 2015 International Property Maintenance Code for health and safety of the town.
"I have the same maybe eight people who blow grass into the streets and maybe eight who don't pick up their trash," VanHorn said.
VanHorn explained that adopting the code would give the city a process to follow to enforce the rules.
After some discussion on whether VanHorn could write citations, and a 10-minute executive session on the matter, Mayor Jean Ford decided it would be best to first give council a chance to review the 2015 International Property Maintenance Code before voting.
In other business:
* The Rev. Elizabeth Campbell-Maleke and Laura Cejka, the program director of the Community Spirit Youth Program, presented council with a proposal to hold a 5k Color Run, Jackson Spirit Run, to help raise funds for handicap accessible playground equipment in Tomlinson Park.
Council member Barbara Lewis said she would talk with Police Chief Shawn Graham and get back with them.
* Stage said contractors for the gas company went through a water line on Park Avenue and the city can't get the leak shut off, so they will need to have a "hot tap" done to solve the problem.
