Two passengers receive injuries

WAVERLY -- A collision between a tractor trailer and a train sent two men to the hospital Monday morning and closed routes along Waverly Road.
The empty semi collided with a CSX train hauling empty coal cars around 9:37 a.m. Monday.
Two Belpre men were in the tractor trailer: driver Larney F. Cole, 78, and owner and passenger James S. Lynn, 31.
According to Sgt. B.A. Pickens of the Wood County Sheriff's Department, the vehicle was going north on Waverly Road toward Route 2 after leaving Carr Concrete.
"The truck started to cross the tracks and Cole didn't see the train coming," Pickens said. "The two men received injuries in the collision and were transported to Marietta Memorial."
Details on their conditions were not immediately available, but first responders reported the driver had sustained facial lacerations while the passenger was complaining of back and neck pain. First responders said the injuries appeared relatively minor.
The collision closed the Corbitt Hill Road crossing and the Sharp Drive crossing, which is directly in front of Waverly Elementary School. Virginia Street, which runs parallel to the tracks in front of the school, remained open the entire time.
Waverly and other Wood County public schools were closed Monday for Spring Break.
Pickens said Cole would be cited for "violation of a railroad grade crossing device or regulation."
The train opened a hole in the passenger side of the trailer, knocking it off the tracks into a nearby ditch. The engine sustained a broken headlight and other minor damage, Pickens said.
The track will remain closed until it can be inspected, he said.
