MARIETTA — A Waterford man was sentenced to six years in prison Friday for robbing a gas station last November.

Philip A. Martin, 28, of 5380 Johnson Ridge Road, was sentenced in Washington County Common Pleas Judge Mark Kerenyi’s courtroom Friday to the maximum in prison for one count of robbery, a second-degree felony, and one count of tampering with evidence, a third-degree felony.

On March 24, Martin pleaded guilty to both counts.

In November, he robbed the Par Mar gas station, at 100 Fifth St. in Beverly, with a BB gun.

According to Washington County Prosecutor Kevin Rings, the victim of the robbery was notified of the sentencing and Rings has spoken with him. During the robbery, Martin indicated to the employee that he had a weapon and allegedly said “Hurry up, I don’t want to put a hole in your chest.”

“After I’d spoken with him, he told me he was quite frightened when he realized what was happening that night,” said Rings. “When it was done and over with, he was still upset regardless of the weapon of choice.”

The day of the robbery, Martin entered the Par Mar store around 1 a.m. dressed in a “Tap-Out” sweatshirt and a black ski mask. According to the Washington County Sheriff Office’s affidavit of facts, the clerk handed over all the money. Martin kept his right hand near his sweatshirt pocket indicating he had a weapon.

The tampering with evidence charge was given because Martin burned his clothes in a wood stove after the robbery.

Kerenyi denied restitution as the amount Martin stole was just around $100.

“At a small gas station in Beverly, the victim wasn’t thinking that an armed robbery would ever take place,” said Rings.

Martin was granted a 169-day credit for time already spent in the Washington County Jail.

Starting at $2.99/week.
