PARKERSBURG -- Police are investigating a 3:30 p.m. report Wednesday of two aggressive and growling pit bulls roaming the area of the 1500 block of Ridgeway Avenue.
Police Chief Joe Martin said an off-duty West Virginia University at Parkersburg campus police officer reported two pit bulls had him trapped in his car for a time Wednesday.
"He said when he pulled in his driveway a pit bull approached him from the rear of his vehicle and was growling and then he noticed another coming at him from the front of his vehicle," Martin said. "He got back in his car and waited a few minutes. The dogs left and when he got out of the car they ran at him on his porch."
At that point, Martin said, the off-duty officer drew his firearm.
"He fired a shot into the ground and they left," Martin said.
It is not known who owns the dogs and how they got loose, Martin said. He added the officers at the scene called for back-up from the Humane Society of Parkersburg and there was no reply.
Martin said prior to Wednesday's incident there had been no complaints about the dogs.
