VIENNA – An amendment to the ordinance regulating the use of outdoor fireplaces passed its second and final reading Thursday during the Vienna City Council meeting.
Under the amendment a fireplace, manufactured outdoor fireplace, fire pit or fire bowl shall be used on single-family residential property only, must be 20 feet from any combustible materials or structures, may not be used on wood decks or balconies, fire must be contained within the outdoor fireplace and must be attended at all times.
It also prohibits any fireplace that is objectionable due to location or local conditions.
Portable fire extinguishers with a minimum rating of 4-A will be required or other approved equipment such as dirt, sand, water barrel or garden hose.
However, the amendment will not apply to grilling or cooking food using charcoal, clean wood, propane or natural gas in cooking or grilling appliances.
Vienna Volunteer Fire Department Chief Steve Scholl said the amendment will not cancel Vienna’s legal burn days of brush on the first Friday and Saturday of each month.
In another matter, Mayor Randy Rapp reported that the project to put a new roof on the police department building hit a snag when asbestos materials were found in the area above the building’s entrance.
Rapp said the asbestos was removed and the project is nearing completion.
Rapp said the crews that removed the asbestos also removed the asbestos that was found in the last building left on the Johns Manville site. That building has since been demolished.
